Arthur Leigh Allen was the most likely suspect in the Zodiac case, but there was not enough physical evidence to prove his guilt. The circumstantial evidence and fear in the community led to Allen being falsely identified as the killer. The identity of the Zodiac Killer remains a mystery, and the case is still open.
It's a movie based on actual events and records — police reports, eyewitness testimony, ciphers, handwriting, fingerprints. Fincher spent upward of two years researching the film alongside screenwriter James Vanderbilt. It's possible that at the time of production, no one knew more about the Zodiac Killer than he did.
Though the Zodiac was never caught and the official investigation remains open, public interest has remained high. Countless theories have gained traction over the years, pointing a finger at various men who share physical markers or specific interests with the famed killer.
In the final scene of Zodiac (2007), survivor Mike Mageau identifies Zodiac suspect Arthur Leigh Allen from a photo lineup. The lineup includes a photo of actor Bob Stephenson, who actually plays one of the three Zodiacs in the film.
To this day, authorities have not formally named anyone as the Zodiac Killer, and only two of his cryptograms have been solved. One of those, however, was long considered the most difficult to parse.
