FAQs

What are fine line tattoos? Fine line tattooing uses small needles (often a single needle) to create a thin, delicate, intricate tattoo design evoking fine artwork and paintings on the skin using black and grey and color tattoo ink.
If your fine line tattoo is in a discreet place that isn't exposed to the sun, it can last ten years before needing a refresh. However, if you have fine line work on exposed skin like your hands or neck, you can expect to visit the studio every 3-5 years for a touch-up of your aged fine line tattoo.
“Due to the level of expertise they require and the painstaking techniques they often utilize, fine line tattoos can be expensive to collect, and fully rendered designs may take longer to achieve than with other styles,” Fevinger tells us.
It may be more uncomfortable to get delicate lines done, as they require a smaller needle size. Smaller fine-line tattoos can be done at the beginning of the session. As the session wears on, it might be comforting to switch to larger needle groupings for shading and filling.
However, there are also some risks associated with fine line tattoos. Because these tattoos are done with smaller needles, they can sometimes result in blowouts - this is when the ink spreads outside of the desired area, resulting in blurry or faded lines.
