When you unlock them they will appear as Forgotten Grimoire until you buy it. They are definitely worth it...but I'd wait. They are very expensive and the most you'll get from them are Pebbles that sell for 2 gil each. As you advance in the game, Monographs become very important in acquiring rare loot/items.
You can get them as soon as you can access shops. They're an odd type of Bazaar item, they become available for doing something so many times, like the Mage's Monograph becomes available for talking to a Magic shop owner so many times.
Monograph's are key items that improve the loot drop on a group of selected enemies, and the rest drop pebbles. But the improved loot is worth it if you are going for the better weapons, armor etc. There are 7 monographs in all, and each one is for specific enemy group.
Repeatedly talk to a weapons merchant until a message saying New Bazaar Goods Available, or something like that, appears. That will put a Forgotten Grimore in the Bazaar Goods section, which will be your Knight's Monomgraph.
