The Best Job for Each Character. Vaan - Considered the jack of all trades but also has a higher than normal HP. Suggest jobs for him would be the Shikari, Uhlan, Knight, or Foebreaker. Balthier - Has a great combo speed.
Vaan: Bushi/Knight - Vaan's high Strength and Magick Power Stats make him the best candidate to use Katanas which go by Strength and Magick Power. Bushi has the Mystic Armors and Magic Lores and Knight has the Heavy Armors and Battle Lores for boosting Damage with the Katana.
He makes for a great Shikari or Knight thanks to his combo ability, and he also fits well as a Red Battlemage and better still as a Foebreaker for support. Despite being depicted with a gun in most of the art, we don't really feel like Balthier is much of a fit for Machinist, though it can make sense as his second job.
Pick whatever you like on whatever character you like, and you'll still be able to handily beat the story as well as all the optional superbosses. People make a big deal out of min/maxing in this game, but most of those fine distinctions are actually largely academic.
