FAQs

Zodiac is a 2007 American mystery thriller film directed by David Fincher and written by James Vanderbilt, based on the nonfiction books by Robert Graysmith: Zodiac (1986) and Zodiac Unmasked (2002).
It's a movie based on actual events and records — police reports, eyewitness testimony, ciphers, handwriting, fingerprints. Fincher spent upward of two years researching the film alongside screenwriter James Vanderbilt. It's possible that at the time of production, no one knew more about the Zodiac Killer than he did.
As the video explains, Fincher went to great lengths to ensure the film was historically accurate, from recreating a period-accurate San Francisco to building sets that matched their real-word counterparts and even dressing the murder victims in the clothes they were wearing when they died.
Robert GraysmithZodiac / Author. Robert Graysmith (born Robert Gray Smith; September 17, 1942) is an American true crime author and former cartoonist. He is known for his work on the Zodiac killer case. In recent years, Graysmith has faced scrutiny from online sleuths, who have called various aspects of his books fraudulent, and inaccurate.
Though the Zodiac was never caught and the official investigation remains open, public interest has remained high. Countless theories have gained traction over the years, pointing a finger at various men who share physical markers or specific interests with the famed killer.
