Story of the Chinese Zodiac

FAQs

According to myth, the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac were selected by a race organised by the Jade Emperor - an important god in the Chinese religion. The 12 animals who were winners in the race were: a pig, dog, rooster, monkey, goat, horse, snake, dragon, rabbit, tiger, ox and rat.
According to myths, the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac were selected through a race. This race is meant to create a time measurement for the people. There could only be twelve winners and in order to win, the animals had to cross a rapid current river and reach the finish line on the shore.
The Jade Emperor, ruler of heaven and earth, decided it would be easier for his people to measure time if he gave them a proper calendar, called a zodiac. He decided to name each year after one of twelve animals. But how could he decide which animals deserved to have years named after them?
The zodiac was divided into 12 astrological signs, each occupying 1/12 (or 30°) of its great circle, by the Babylonians about 500 bce. Many of the Babylonian signs (for example, the Twins [Gemini], the Crab [Cancer], the Balance [Libra], among others) are still used today.
The Chinese lunisolar calendar determines the specific animal and element associated with a particular year. The Year of the Dragon in 2024 is associated with the element of Wood. The combination of the animal sign (Dragon) and the element (Wood) designates the year as the Year of the Wood Dragon.
