There are 12 Chinese zodiac signs, in the following order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The zodiac is divided along the ecliptic into 12 equal parts (signs), each occupying 30° of celestial longitude. These signs roughly correspond to the astronomical constellations with the following modern names: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
On New Year's day, we enter a new Chinese zodiac cycle, which follows this order:
- Rat - 鼠 - shǔ
- Ox - 牛 - niú
- Tiger - 虎 - hǔ
- Rabbit - 兔 - tù
- Dragon - 龍 - lóng.
- Snake - 蛇 - shé
- Horse - 馬 / 马 - mǎ
- Ram - 羊 - yáng.

Each year in the repeating zodiac cycle of 12 years is represented by a zodiac animal, each with its own reputed attributes.
